Clare volunteer Ambrose Heagney highlights teamwork behind GAA

A Clare GAA volunteer has described the teamwork involved in running matches and maintaining facilities as a “jigsaw” where every piece has to come together.

Ambrose Heagney was speaking to Clare FM’s Morning Focus as part of the County Clare – European Volunteering Capital 2027: Faces of Volunteering series.

“For it to be successful, it’s like a jigsaw. Every piece has to be put together,” he said, describing the contribution of volunteers across Clare GAA.

Ambrose, who retired as a mental health nurse three years ago, was keen to find new ways to spend his time. A lifelong supporter of hurling and football, he had previously been involved as an underage manager with Corofin GAA.

He subsequently joined the Clare GAA Fixtures Committee before taking on the role of Volunteer Safety and Facilities Officer.

As a member of the Clare GAA executive, Ambrose has particular responsibility for the safety and upkeep of Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chíosóg in Ennis.

For Ambrose, Clare’s European Volunteering Capital 2027 title is not simply an accolade, but recognition of the scale of voluntary work already taking place across the county.

The official launch of County Clare – European Volunteering Capital 2027 takes place at Treacys West County Hotel, Ennis, at 6pm on Thursday, September 24. The public is invited to attend.
